Promoting Sustainable Fishing Practices
Today, about a quarter of the world's fisheries are overfished, depleted or recovering. And half of our fisheries are at or near their sustainable limit. As the world's population increases, the work to expand sustainable fishing practices is becoming more important than ever.
Collaborative partnership with Masyarakat dan Perikanan Indonesia (MDPI)
Founded in July 2013 as an independent foundation, MDPI is focused on achieving responsible and sustainable yellowfin tuna fisheries activities in Indonesia and the region, and focused on small scale, artisanal fisheries.
MDPI’s efforts are aided by funds generated from sales of Wild Selections in Canada.
In addition, MDPI acts as client for MSC certification, as well as advancing marine conservation efforts in the region.
It currently comprises of 14 member companies and is growing.
A collaborative venture helps fund research and initiatives that increase the supply of sustainable seafood.
This initiative is the first of its kind in canned seafood in Canada, and Wild Selections® is the only shelf stable seafood product that donates proceeds from sales to organizations focused on increasing sustainable options and protecting marine ecosystems.
Where will MDPI direct funding generated by sales of Wild Selections?
Our current initiative is combatting Illegal, Unreported & Unregulated (IUU) fishing by registering all boats with Unique Vessel Identification (UVI) numbers, improving data systems, community awareness & knowledge development and co-management development.
