Feeding the World Today and Tomorrow
Today about half of the world's fisheries are at or near their sustainable limit, but together we can make a positive difference. The MSC's mission is to work collaboratively with Wild Selections® as well as fisheries, partners and others to ensure the abundance of the seafood we love for generations to come.
31 Performance Indicators for Assessing Fisheries
The MSC's third-party certification process for fisheries is rigorous, transparent and science based. Fisheries are assessed by independent scientific teams against the MSC standard and its three core principles: maintaining a sustainable level of fish stocks, minimizing environmental impact and effective fishery management.
Generating Real Results
MSC certified fisheries are producing real results – on average they have increased the abundance of fish stocks 46% over ten years, compared with only 9% for uncertified fisheries.
The Lesson of the Atlantic Northwest Cod Fishery
For hundreds of years this fishery shaped the lives and communities of Canada's eastern coast, and was a plentiful resource for food. Sadly, due to a variety of reasons, including significant overfishing over many years, in 1992 the cod population suddenly plummeted to 1% of its former size.
The Canadian government declared a moratorium, making it their largest ever industrial closure. The collapse of the Atlantic Northwest Cod Fishery is one example of why organizations like the MSC are critically important, to help ensure that fisheries are sustainable.
